Toyota OBD

Introduction

This page contains information related to Toyota's OBD systems as found on pre 1996 engines.

OBD stands for "On Board Diagnostic" and is a system built into the engine ECU to allow faults and information to be transmitted to an external system.  A serial output which outputs 14 to 20 data words exists on a number of early 90's Toyota's engine ECUs.

Generating OBD Output on VF1 Engine ECU Pin

The OBD serial output is generated on the VF1 engine ECU pin when the engine ECU TE2 pin is grounded.

The signal is 0VDCV to 5VDC.  A logic one is represented as 5VDC.
