Converting MS85 Front Hubs to xA6x

Page history last edited by wilbo666 10 years, 11 months ago

Introduction

This page details information regarding modifying MS85 Crown front hubs such that they can be used on xA6x and other vehicles that share the same spindle.

MS85 Crown's are quite common (especially when compared to MS65 Crown what are also useful for converting to 5 stud) and this is one option for converting xA6x (and others) to 5 stud front hubs.

Information is predominantly based off data from SKF as it is easily available.  There are likely other ways of achieving the desired outcome, some of which maybe easier than suggested in this guide.

Disclaimer

This is a suggested procedure only and no responsibility is taken by the author.  The author suggests that the reader themselves measure and check to ensure that the correct machining is undertaken.  If in any doubt do not preform this modification.

MS85 Hub Modification Procedure

This procedure is designed to utilise 09067/09195/Q and 15123/15245/Q bearings.

The following outlines suggested machining steps to MS85 hubs to allow the fitment of bearings enabling MS85 hubs to be mounted to hubs utilising MA61 etc wheel bearings.  This procure may also suit MS112 and MS123 hubs, however the author has not verified this.

Machining is performed to the MS85 hub.  Care should be taken to ensure that the bearing cups fit securely into the machined hub, if too much material is removed from the hub then the bearing cup will not seat securely.

The measurements in the procedure in regards to bearing cup bore depth should place the wheel mounting face in the same position as if the MS85 hub was not modified; this may not be the same position as the stock MA61 etc wheel mounting face.  The possible change in the wheel mounting and brake disk mounting faces should be taken into account to ensure that the brake assembly is correct.

Outer Bearing (09067/09195/Q replaces LM11949/910/Q)
•    Increase bearing cup OD by 3.988mm  (new OD=49.225mm minus the material for an interference fit required)
•    Increase bearing cup seat ID by ~1.5mm (clearance hole for the stub axle)
•    Increase bearing cup bore depth by 2.35mm (22mm to 23.45mm; from measured values)

Inner Bearing (15123/15245/Q replaces LM67048/010/Q)
•    Increase bearing cup OD by 2.869mm  (new OD=61.912mm minus the material for an interference fit required)
•    Increase bearing cup seat ID by ~1.5mm (clearance hole for the stub axle)
•    Increase bearing cup bore depth by 2.4mm (25.6mm to 28mm; from measured values)

Seal:
•    Part Number: AMAANDO 400109 TA 48 62 7.5 3 (MA61 etc seal)

Wheel Bearing Grease Cap:

•    Neither the existing MA61 or MS85 wheel bearing grease cap will fit after the required machining.  Currently the author knows of no off the shelf / direct fit wheel bearing grease cap.
